Welcome to Elderfield Cooking and Crafting Stations
Food for dungeon trips, forge steel for bosses, and ritual gear for cursed crops.
Food is not a side activity in Welcome to Elderfield. Exploration burns meals. The mall, the sewers, and the mines all last longer than a raw Bitter Herb. You cook at the home kitchen, then walk out with a packed inventory instead of a prayer. The Steam demo, playable since October 2024, already contains the oven, early recipes, and the first processing benches. The full game dated September 10, 2026 adds more house ranks, more stations, and more cursed crop loops. There is single-player only kitchen; you eat what you plate.
Start by treating the fridge like a second HP bar. Dough, Mystery Meat, fish, herbs, and pumpkin products all convert into denser heals than their raw parts. If a fight on the combat page looks long, cook the night before, not in the hallway after a Shopper. Pair meals with a bath so curses do not eat the heal. Sleep and curses explains why a perfect pie still fails a doomed sleeper.
Chef Elroy and the pumpkin path
Chef Elroy sells and teaches recipes once you have earned them. Pumpkin Pie, Pumpkin Muffin, and Special Donut unlock after you finish Hans’s pumpkin path — the same stretch that asks for a Giant Skull Chalice and opens Fast Food Fiend. Until that path is done, Elroy’s board stays thin. Grow pumpkins on the farm, smelt the chalice ores in Mall Mines, and come back with proof. Pie is a strong exploration meal; muffins are a cheaper stack; the Special Donut is the treat you save for Hall Monitor or Mall Administrator.
Elroy is also a townsfolk node. Evenings at the saloon put him in chatting range with Hans, Molly, and whoever else crawled out of the romance list. A liked dish as a gift is not the same as a cooked heal in your own slot. Cook twice: once to eat, once to hand over.
Fish recipes arrive from Herb at the lakefront, not from Elroy. Tempura, Ghost Flounder Soup, and Ghost Broth follow the first fishing stages. Baked Fish Fillet and Fog Broth follow the Fog Eel stage. That is why a kitchen without a rod is half a kitchen. See fishing and mining for bait and water.
Stations you actually place
Crafting in Elderfield is a row of named benches, not a single magic menu.
- Furnace. Hans’s Skull Chalice task hands you one furnace and the recipe. Smelt ore into bars before Molly or the forge will take you seriously. Copper first, then whatever Mall Mines coughs up.
- Grinder. Turns wheat into dough and stranger crops into pastes (eyeballs become Secret Sauce). A windmill can share this job later. Dough is the backbone of bread-adjacent meals.
- Drying Rack. Preserves herbs, meat, and fish so a three-day mall plan does not rot in the pack.
- Witching Mortar. The ritual bench. Offering of the Void is the product you care about. Cursed crop work later needs this mortar plus a Ritual Brazier; do not sell the first offering.
- Juicer. Arrives with a house upgrade from Klaus. Drinks and cocktails for MP and exploration. If your kitchen has no juicer, talk to Klaus before you hunt juice recipes.
- Food Processor. Henrietta’s ranch shop sells the blueprint. Animal products go in; cooking ingredients come out.
- Casks. Aging. Aged Rum is not a joke item — Tanner loves it, and a cask is how you get there without hoping a loot table pities you.
Place benches at home, on the farm, at the workshop, or at the ranch when the blueprint allows it. Inventory space is the hidden ingredient. Buy pouches at the general store before you start a grind day that outputs twenty dough.
Forging weapons and why the kitchen is not enough
Molly’s workshop is the other half of crafting. Copper for her early task comes from the Beginner Mines. Bars from the Furnace become staves, bats, and armor at the forge. Wooden Staff, Copper Staff, Metal Bat, and the later Darkness and Verdite lines all eat wood, bars, string, and leather. The combat tier list is useless if you never smelt. Hall Monitor’s +1 AP drop does not replace a real weapon.
God Forge recipes at the church sit on a different calendar. Sunday old gods alignment swaps that list: Bone Staff for Kaal, Trident for Daeus, Enchanted Pitchfork for Hagroth. Craft sacred hardware on the matching week, then go back to Molly for the mundane steel.
Cursed crops, void, and the brazier
Normal wheat and pumpkins do not need a cult. Cursed crops do. Ritual of the Void, crafted in the Witching Mortar once you have learned it, plus a Ritual Brazier, is the pair that lets void-leaning seeds grow instead of blighting the plot. Offering of the Void is the mortar output that feeds that loop. If a seed description mentions the void, stop planting it on a clean Hagroth field and set the ritual up first.
This is also how late gifts such as Voidbloom, Soul Fruit, and Void Dinner become possible for Sam. You cannot romance a void palate on wheat alone. Keep the mortar, keep the brazier, and read the crop tier list before you waste a season on a seed you cannot legally grow.
A practical cook-and-craft day
Morning: harvest, grind wheat, start a furnace load of copper. Midday: cook two stacks — one dense heal for the mall, one gift if you will see Tanner or Sam. Afternoon: mine or fish to refill the fridge. Evening: saloon, then a cask check, then sleep after 6pm. Klaus’s next house rank should be on that list as soon as money allows, because Juicer and extra kitchen space are quality-of-life, not vanity.
If you are still in the first week, follow Getting Started and the first-week planner before you buy every blueprint. The demo walkthrough calls out which recipes the October 2024 demo actually contains. Demo notes catch patch changes to stations. The September 10, 2026 build is planned to widen the house, the forge, and the void garden; cook with what the current build gives you, and do not wait for a station that is still on the roadmap.
A full pack of pie, a bar of copper, and an Offering of the Void will carry more runs than a rare sword you cannot swing because you fainted in Burgers Burgers. Plate first. Forge second. Ritual third.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Where do I cook in Welcome to Elderfield?
At the home kitchen. Food fuels exploration; raw herbs will not cover a mall floor. House upgrades from Klaus add stations such as the Juicer.
How do I unlock Pumpkin Pie, Muffin, and Special Donut?
Complete Hans's pumpkin path, including the Skull Chalice work that opens extra Elroy recipes. Grow pumpkins on the farm, then buy or cook from Chef Elroy's updated board.
What does the Witching Mortar craft?
Ritual items, including Offering of the Void. Cursed crops need Ritual of the Void plus a Ritual Brazier; the mortar is where that chain starts.
When do I get a Furnace?
Starting Hans's Giant Skull Chalice task grants a Furnace and the furnace recipe. Smelt Mall Mines ores there; the Beginner Mines do not drop everything the chalice needs.
Is crafting shared in multiplayer?
No. The game is single-player. Your kitchen, casks, forge queue, and mortar offerings exist only on that save.
