Welcome to Elderfield Elderfield Demo Notes

A vertical slice you can play now — town, farm, ranch, and the dead mall as dungeon one.

Demo Notes

The Welcome to Elderfield Steam demo is a vertical slice, not a trial timer glued to the main menu. It has been playable since October 2024. It includes one area of town, the farm and ranch, the local mall as the first dungeon, and several smaller places (woods edge, workshop mine, apartments, playground). The developers have described it as roughly one sixth of the planned finished game. The full PC game is dated September 10, 2026. Date context lives on the release date page; this page is about what is already in the slice.

Use the demo as a rehearsal for launch week, not as a completionist exam. When the slice stops you, that is the border, not a bug you have to theorycraft through.

What you can do in the demo

You can wake up in the house, bathe, cook, sleep, watch the news, and decorate. You can greet Tanner, walk west to Farmer Hans, cleanse tentacles, plant wheat and radish, and place a scarecrow. You can help Molly at the workshop and mine copper. You can gift people using the gift tables. You can chase Sam’s note to Dave’s door. You can enter the mall, fight Shoppers and rats, and take a run at the Hall Monitor when you have food.

You can fish and poke the beginner mine. You can die in your sleep and learn why curses are part of the loop. You can pick Cozy or Normal and learn that Nightmare is a later idea. You can meet playground kids, apartment neighbors, Chef Elroy, the Mall Rat, and — if the calendar lines up — the Tax Man on the farm path.

That is already a game. Treat it like one.

What the demo is not

It is not the full town. Store copy has said the finished town should be more than three times this size. It is not the full dungeon list; at least two more mall-like areas are planned, with multiple levels. It is not the finished Old God alignment layer or the full calendar-event set. It is not a multiplayer test. It is not a Roblox demo.

If a YouTuber shows a patron alpha with catacombs or extra crops, that is a different build. This wiki’s play advice targets the public Steam demo plus systems the store already promises for September 10, 2026.

Suggested demo route

Follow the first-week planner even if you only have the slice:

  1. House, Tanner, Hans, wheat.
  2. Scarecrow, more plots, Molly’s copper.
  3. News, one mystery, Sam’s note, a loved gift that is not pumpkin pie for Sam.
  4. Mall with meals, Hall Monitor if ready.

Then stop and decide whether you want another loop or a wishlist click. The demo walkthrough is the narrative path; the planner is the discipline. Getting Started remains the onboarding page if the HUD still looks like a kitchen.

Demo habits that transfer to 1.0

Watering is not optional. Scarecrows are not decoration. Food outranks stick cosmetics. Bathing before delves is cheaper than stacking curses. Hans wants wheat. Sam hates pumpkin dishes. Ellie stays home in rain. The Tax Man will name a tithe. AP is a budget. Once a fight starts you cannot run. Those sentences should still be true on September 10. Crop ranks on the crop list and difficulty ranks on the combat list are built from that assumption.

Save-transfer from demo to full game is not something this page will promise. Rehearse the habits. Expect a fresh file unless official notes say otherwise.

Demo v0.11.17 and language toggles

Store news dated 1 September 2026 listed demo v0.11.17 alongside a localization pass: Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, French, German, and Russian can be set from the Language option on the first page of the options menu. English remains the full-audio track. If a string still looks untranslated, that is a build issue, not a missing wiki page.

Manga Mode is a separate graphics toggle (high-contrast black and white) added in earlier demo-era builds. It does not change crop timers or Hall Monitor HP. Turn it on if you want the Junji Ito still-frame look; leave it off if you prefer the harvest-gold pixel palette.

Known demo-era friction (historical)

The demo has gone through many numbered builds. Players have seen farm-visitor systems, crop-load rewrites, localization toggles, and controller tweaks. Steam Deck users previously reported Proton Hotfix/Experimental crashes on splash screens that Proton 9.0-4 avoided. Late August 2026 brought a Steam Deck Verified announcement for the shipping game. If your current demo misbehaves on Deck, check the live compatibility notes and system requirements rather than copying a 2024 workaround blindly.

Performance options exist because this started as a game that wanted to run on modest PCs. If 1280×768 is ugly but stable, that is a valid demo setting.

How this page will change

When 1.0 exists, demo notes should shrink into a historical section: what the slice taught, what did not transfer, what the mall gained. Until then, this is the playable-build page and the updates hub is the index. The Next Fest trailer on that hub is not a substitute for installing the demo.

If you only remember one demo note, remember this: the mall is optional on day one, the wheat is not. Play the slice until that feels obvious. Then wishlist the September 10, 2026 game and keep your scarecrow recipe in muscle memory. Elderfield’s demo is generous. It is also very willing to let you starve in a food court you entered for fun.

Official store, Discord, and socials belong on links. Come back here when someone asks “is the demo worth it?” The answer is yes if you like farming sims that bite. The answer is also yes if you only want to test whether your PC or Deck will run the September build. Either way, install it, plant wheat, and let Hans judge your first harvest.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

What is in the Welcome to Elderfield demo?

Part of town, the farm and ranch, the mall as the first dungeon, and side spaces like the workshop mine. It is a vertical slice, about one sixth of the planned game.

How long has the demo been playable?

Since October 2024 on Steam. The full game is still dated September 10, 2026. See release date.

Should I play the demo before the full game?

Yes if you want a rehearsal. Follow the first-week planner and Getting Started.

Does demo progress carry into 1.0?

Do not count on a transfer until official notes say so. Practice the loops; expect a new save.

Can I finish the mall in the demo?

You can enter it, learn Shoppers and rats, and fight Hall Monitor when ready. It is dungeon one, not the entire planned dungeon list. Route: mall dungeon.
