Farming and Taxes

Farming is how Welcome to Elderfield funds the mall, the kitchen, and the Tax Man. It is not a stamina minigame. There is no energy bar. You can hoe until midnight. What stops you is tentacles, water, crows, gold, and a skeleton farmer who still expects wheat. Read this after Getting Started if Hans is still a rumor, and keep the crop tier list open when you have extra seed money.

Tanner, your school friend at the gate, points west. Farmer Hans — he shed his skin; the skeleton runs the farmhouse — lets you use the fields. Old Man Crawford sells tools and seeds inside. Chef Elroy sells recipe books once you prove you can grow. Ghost tentacles sit on crop plots. Interact with a tentacle while Cleansing Balm is in the inventory to clear it. Interact again with a hoe to till. Choose a seed. Water. That is the whole verb chain: balm, hoe, seed, water. Skip water and the plant pauses. It does not die. Water it tomorrow and the night counter resumes.

Plots are gated. Hans hands you enough gold and a few balms to start a small rectangle. More soil costs more balm, found in the world, bought, or earned from tasks. Flower plots around the farmhouse and special 2×2 plots are a later cosmetic / specialty layer; they do not replace wheat. Acorns can plant trees on the farm or ranch when you have them. Ranch animals are a separate sink for Hay. Do not spend day-one gold on novelty before the Tax Man has been paid once.

Nights, midnight, and scarecrows

Crops grow at night. A day is about 20 minutes real time and flips at midnight even if you never sleep. Sleeping after 6pm is still the fastest way to burn nights if you want a harvest before a bill; the luck die on sleep and curses is the tax you pay for that skip. Stay awake and you can keep watering, mining, and cooking while the clock runs.

Crows pick a growing tile. Fully grown crops are skipped. A scarecrow cuts the chance. Place one as soon as Crawford will sell it, and craft better ones at a workbench when you can. One scarecrow is not a cathedral; it is a percentage. If you cannot cover the field, plant your tax wheat in the protected cluster and put vanity crops on the edge.

Bathe when you return from the mall. A bath restores HP and MP, strips blessings and curses, and respawns monsters and mysteries. A weekly bath regenerates forage and mines, which matters if you are mixing fishing and mining with farm days. House upgrades through Klaus expand storage and comfort; they do not hoe for you.

Quality rolls explain the sell ranges. Process wheat in the grinder after The Farmer’s Path. Cook radish and pumpkin instead of dumping every harvest in the shop if you are heading to the mall — cooking and crafting is how farm gold becomes HP. A seasonal vendor visits Monday and Friday outside spring; check their cart before you overplant a crop they will undercut or before you skip a seed they only carry twice a week.

Hans, bills, and the Pale Moon

The Farmer’s Path is one wheat in Hans’s hand. Do it early for the grinder and Elroy. The Skull Chalice sends you into mall mines for a Giant Skull Chalice; finishing it unlocks pumpkin seeds and more recipes. Fast Food Fiend is combat, not horticulture: kill Denizen of the Deep-Fryer (200 HP) in Burgers Burgers. Those three tasks sit on the demo walkthrough because they are how the farm grows into the dungeon.

The Tax Man arrives about every two weeks. Pale Moon, Tax Fog, silent creatures, a horse that is not a horse. He waits at your farm. The first invoice is usually a wheat-and-radish bundle (often six wheat and two radishes). Pay. He is “fair” in the way a cosmic auditor is fair: boons if you have the crops, another price if you do not. Keep a chest labeled for him. Do not cook the last wheat the night before Fog.

A practical farm week

Morning: water every tilled tile, harvest ripe ones, replant the tax set first. Midday: forage, talk, or run the mall with food from yesterday’s cook. Evening: water again if you unlocked more plots, bathe if cursed, then either sleep for nights or stay up to grind combat prep. Midnight will happen without you. If you are in the mines at 11:50, finish the swing or walk out; the date change does not pause a fight.

Expand only as fast as you can water. Eight wheat you remember beats twenty tiles you forget. Cleansing Balm is the real expansion currency — Tracy’s laundry task and exploration chests beat impulse buys. When a mystery or an Old God wants a crop, read mysteries and Old Gods before you rip up the tax row. Townsfolk and gifts will ask for produce; give surplus, not the bill.

Farming in Elderfield is cozy until the fog. The loop is honest: tentacles, water, crows, taxes. Learn it on the demo slice, then take the same habits into the September 10, 2026 1.0 when the town triples. For binds while facing plots, use controls. For a calendar, use the first-week planner. For everything else, the guides hub is west of this page, same as the farm.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

How do I start farming with Hans?

Walk west from Tanner, take Hans's offer, use Cleansing Balm on ghost tentacles, hoe, plant, and water. Unwatered crops pause instead of dying.

Which crop should I plant first?

Wheat for The Farmer's Path and the Tax Man (5g, four nights, 12–24g), then radish for gold (10g, four nights, 40–80g).

Do crows eat ripe crops?

No. Crows skip fully grown tiles. A scarecrow reduces the chance they eat a still-growing plant.

When does the Tax Man show up?

About every two weeks, announced by Pale Moon and Tax Fog. Meet him at the farm with the listed crops.

Does the day change if I never sleep?

Yes. Midnight still rolls the date after about 20 minutes of real time. Sleep is optional after 6pm and only needed when you want the luck die or faster nights.

How do I unlock pumpkin seeds?

Complete Hans's Giant Skull Chalice task with mall-mine materials. Pumpkin costs 20g, grows in eight nights, and sells for 90–180g.
