Plant wheat and radish first. Unlock pumpkin. Leave 24-night luxury for later.

Crop Rankings

This crop list is for players who would rather not discover, on night 24, that cauliflower was a vanity project. Welcome to Elderfield grows ordinary grain beside eyeballs and teeth. Rank is about nights, seed cost, quests, recipes, and whether the Tax Man can harvest your mistake. Pair this page with the farming guide and the combat ranks so you are not planting coffee while the Hall Monitor eats you. The parent tier list hub explains the criteria.

Assumptions: you water daily, you placed at least one scarecrow, you cleansed tentacles before sowing, and you are playing the Steam demo (playable since October 2024) or preparing for the September 10, 2026 PC game. RPG Maker farming is still farming. Missed water is a rank drop in practice.

S-tier — plant these immediately

Wheat. Cheap seeds, short cycle, and Farmer Hans’s first test (The Farmer’s Path) asks for it. Wheat becomes dough, which becomes every bakery-adjacent recipe Chef Elroy will eventually sell. It also looks like a crop the Tax Man understands. If you only have three cleansed plots on day one, two of them should be wheat. Hans is a skeleton; he is not patient in a narrative sense, and you want the grinder and Elroy’s shop open before you dream about pumpkins.

Radish. About four nights, high sell price, and it shows up in more recipes than its sprite suggests. Radish is how you turn a small field into mall food money. It is also a plant you can spare for pickles and quest cooking without starving Hans. If wheat is the key, radish is the wallet.

S-tier is not “the most eldritch.” S-tier is the pair that lets the rest of the list exist.

A-tier — unlock and keep a patch

Pumpkin. Gated behind Hans’s later work (the skull-chalice / mall-adjacent chain). Once unlocked, pumpkin pies and muffins print gold. Pumpkin is also a gift landmine: Sam hates pumpkin dishes. Grow it for the economy and for anyone who is not Sam. Do not plant a field of it before wheat is looping.

Eyeleaf. Cheap eyeballs. That sentence is the rank. Eyeleaf is fast, nasty, and useful for cooking and for neighbors like Ellie who actually want pickled horror. Tanner hates eyeballs, so this is not a universal gift crop. It is a crafting crop that happens to look like a jump scare.

Beans. They regrow. In a game where tentacle clears and seed costs add up, a plant that keeps paying rent without a fresh seed every harvest is A-tier even if each pod is less glamorous than a pumpkin. Beans feed stews. Stews feed combat. That is the whole argument.

B-tier — plant with a reason

Corn. Unlocked after Hans’s Fast Food Fiend mall hunt (the deep-fryer denizen). Cornbread and related recipes are real, but corn is slower and more gated than radish. Grow it when the mall is already part of your week, not as a day-two experiment.

Gloomhops. A short-cycle specialty after Hans’s bug-catching task. Useful, flavorful, and easy to overplant because it feels “on theme.” Keep a strip, not a farm.

Toothbush. Teeth are ingredients. They are also hated gifts for Tanner and Molly. Toothbush belongs in a crafting corner beside Eyeleaf, not in your gold rotation. Twelve-night-class wait times (demo seed text) make it a patience tax. Plant it when you need teeth, not because the name is funny.

C-tier — only if you have time

Cauliflower. Long wait — treat it as a 24-night-class luxury unless a patch shortens it. It is a completionist plant. If the Tax Man is due and your scarecrow is still in the chest, do not start cauliflower.

Grapes and coffee. Expensive, slow, and smug. They are fine when the farm is a machine and you are decorating a life. They are a mistake when you still owe Hans wheat. If you have the spare plots and the days, grow a novelty. If you do not, buy a cup in town and walk away.

Cursed and special — high value, gated

Eldersprout and Soul Fruit sit above C-tier in raw value and below S-tier in access. Soul Fruit is a loved gift for Sam and Molly and a 24-day-class plant in demo seed text. Eldersprout is similarly gated. These are not first-week crops. They are why you keep playing after the mall stops being a wall. Rank them as “S-tier later,” which is not the same as planting them on day one.

Nursery flowers, trees, and 2x2 special plots do not need water the way Crawford’s field seeds do. They are decoration and long bets, not this list’s S-tier.

Rank modifiers the table cannot show

Scarecrows. A field without one is a lottery. Crows do not care that wheat is S-tier.

Daily water. Unless a rain ritual is running, missed water is missed gold. The first-week planner puts watering before the mall for a reason.

Tentacles. Ghost tentacles occupy plots until you cleanse them. Your real rank cap is “how many tiles did I actually free,” not “how many seed types did I buy.”

Tax Man. He walks the farm path on a roughly two-week cadence and names a due. Wheat and radish make that bill boring. Cauliflower makes it a panic. He is not a crop, but he is why C-tier exists.

Gifts versus gold. Sam hates pumpkin. Tanner hates eyeballs and teeth. A-tier Eyeleaf can still be a social F-tier. Check the gift guide before you turn the S-tier field into dating ammo.

Suggested field, week one

Two wheat, one radish, one Eyeleaf if you have a fourth plot, beans when a fifth exists. Scarecrow. Water. Hans. Molly’s copper. Then pumpkin when the quest says so. That layout survives the Tax Man, feeds cooking, and leaves room for the first-week mall day. If you want a cursed screenshot, take it after the wheat is in the chest, not instead of the wheat.

For difficulty and mall bosses, switch to combat ranks. Crops will not kill the Hall Monitor. Meals cooked from these ranks will.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Why is wheat S-tier in Welcome to Elderfield?

It is cheap, Hans requires it, and it becomes dough for cooking. Skip it and you delay Chef Elroy and the rest of the farm. See farming.

How fast is radish?

About four nights, with a high sell price and many recipes. Plant it beside wheat on day one if you have the plots.

Should I plant pumpkin immediately?

No. Unlock it through Hans, then grow it for pies. Do not gift pumpkin dishes to Sam; she hates them. Gift rules: gift guide.

Are Soul Fruit and Eldersprout worth it?

Yes, later. They are high value and gated. They are not week-one plants. Sam loves Soul Fruit when you finally have extra.

Does the Tax Man change what I should grow?

He makes short, cheap loops safer. Keep wheat and radish running so a tithe does not land on empty soil. Timing help: first-week planner.

Where do combat ranks live?

On the combat tier list and the parent tier list hub.
