Welcome to Elderfield Steam Demo Walkthrough
House to farm to mall: the vertical slice in a sensible order.
The Welcome to Elderfield demo is not a teaser hallway. Chris Cote shipped a vertical slice — about one-sixth of the planned 1.0, commonly 10–20 hours — on Steam in October 2024, and players have been living in it ever since. Reviews sit near 96% positive across 500+ posts. The slice contains one town district, the farm and ranch, the local mall dungeon, and several side spaces. The dated full release on September 10, 2026 is expected to grow the town past 3× this footprint and add more dungeon stacks. This walkthrough is a route, not a 100% checklist. Use Getting Started if you have not left the bedroom, and keep demo notes open for patch quirks.
You are a graduate with free time and no exit. The town is single-player. Nobody is dropping into your farm. Soundtrack by Dated, art in a hand-drawn horror manga register, engine RPG Maker MZ. Difficulty: Cozy if you came for chores, Normal if you want the intended fights, Nightmare if you accept a rollback to the last manual save. Bindings are on the controls page; fix config.rmmzsave before you blame the mall.
Hour one: house, Tanner, Hans
Search the house. Bed saves. Bath fills HP and MP, clears blessings and curses, and respawns monsters and mysteries; a weekly bath also refreshes forage and mines. Kitchen cooks. TV is the news. Radio plays found tapes. Storage is shared with the farm. Klaus is the upgrade contact when you have gold. Grab the gate key, fight the tutorial rat if it jumps you, and talk to Tanner outside. He points west.
Farmer Hans — skeleton, former skin, still a landlord of sorts — lets you work the infested fields. Cleansing Balm on ghost tentacles, hoe, seed, water. Unwatered crops pause; they do not die. Plant wheat (5g, four nights, 12–24g sell) and radish (10g, four nights, 40–80g). Drop a scarecrow; crows skip ripe tiles. Show Hans one wheat for The Farmer’s Path. Keep six wheat and two radishes for the Tax Man, who rides in about every two weeks under Pale Moon and Tax Fog. Full crop math is on the farming page and the crop tier list.
Sleep only after 6pm, and only if you want the luck die. Stay awake if you are mid-water or mid-mine; midnight still flips the day in about 20 real minutes. Sleep and curses explains Heavy Eyelids through Sleep Finds You. Bathe when a curse is uglier than the blessing it came with.
Town tasks that gate the slice
Walk the district with food in the bag. NPC schedules matter; the townsfolk list is the roster, gifts if you are raising hearts, romance if you are pushing a relationship in the demo’s available cast.
- The Farmer’s Path — Hans. One wheat. Unlocks the grinder and Elroy’s recipes.
- The Skull Chalice — Hans. Craft a Giant Skull Chalice from mall-mine materials. Starts you with a furnace; finishing it unlocks pumpkin seeds (20g, eight nights, 90–180g) and more recipes.
- A Fast Food Fiend — Hans. Kill the thing in Burgers Burgers. That is Denizen of the Deep-Fryer at 200 HP.
- Molly — copper ore and an Elder Gem from the mall mines. Buy a basic pickaxe from the Mall Rat just inside; see fishing and mining.
- Abby — Shopper-Bopper. Treat it as a mall fetch, not a farm chore.
- Dave’s door — Sam’s Cryptic Note reads
43_81. The code is 43681. Write it down; PrintScreen if you have to.
Mysteries spawn around the map and on the news. They are dicey on purpose. The mysteries and Old Gods pages cover offerings and bad luck. Do not spend your last Cleansing Balm on a mystery tile when Hans still has tentacles on the good soil.
Mall route
The mall is the dungeon. Encounters are unavoidable, first-person, turn-based, one action per AP. Items cost 1 AP. You cannot run. Food is HP. Death on Normal: 5% gold, home, enemies and mysteries reset. Prep from the combat guide and the combat tier list. Cook first — cooking and crafting — then enter.
Scout the hallway, fight only what you must, and learn the food court. Hall Monitor is a 150 HP mall boss; treat that fight as your gear check. Mall Administrator is 250 HP and drops the Skull of the Mall. Deep-Fryer is 200 HP in Burgers Burgers for Hans. The mines under the food court shuffle. A weekly bath regenerates them, which is a feature when you are hunting Molly’s gem and a curse when you were mapping a path. Use the mall dungeon page for room-by-room notes instead of this overview.
If you wipe, do not immediately re-enter hungry. Bathe, cook, water crops, then go back. The reset is the game teaching you that the mall is a resource sink, not a loot piñata.
A sane demo order
Day 1–2: house, Tanner, Hans, wheat and radish, scarecrow, news, one bath. Day 3–4: Farmer’s Path, extra plots, forage, first mall scout with cheap food. Day 5–7: Tax Man buffer, Molly’s pickaxe run, Abby if you see her, Dave’s 43681 when you have the note. Week 2: Skull Chalice materials, Fast Food Fiend when your weapon is not a stick, pumpkin seeds, then whatever mystery the news is shouting about. Sleep when you want luck or fast crop nights; stay up when you are clearing a mall floor and can live with eyelids.
Stop before burnout. The slice is large, but it is still a slice: one town area, one dungeon, a farm that will grow in 1.0. Wishlist the Steam page, track release date news, and dump leftover questions on the guides hub rather than forcing a 100% that the demo cannot give you. If a bind breaks mid-route, delete config.rmmzsave and come back. If a curse is eating your hit chance, bathe. If the Tax Man is in the fog, pay him before you kiss a boss.
That is the walkthrough: west first, wheat second, mall third, codes and chalices when the chest can spare the items. Everything else is optional horror.
