Combat Rankings

Combat in Welcome to Elderfield is turn-based AP math wearing a cozy sweater. You can almost ignore it. You can also let it eat the save. This page ranks difficulty presets, early investments, mall bosses, and the habits that matter more than a prettier stick. It sits beside crop ranks because meals are equipment. The parent tier list hub is the index. The combat guide is the mechanical deep dive.

Elderfield is single-player. There is no group to revive you in the food court. Cozy mode exists so story farmers can meet Tanner without learning weakness charts. That is a valid S-tier choice for that goal. It is a C-tier choice if you came for the RPG.

Difficulty ranks

Cozy — S-tier for story, C-tier for RPG practice. Cozy trivializes fights so you can farm, gift, and watch the news. Pick it if horror atmosphere is the point and numbers are noise. You can still die in your sleep; Cozy is not a deathless novel. Read sleep and curses anyway.

Normal — S-tier for a real RPG. Enemy stats stay honest. Death still costs a little gold, not your entire week, if you respect baths and food. This is the default recommendation for anyone who wants the mall to feel like a dungeon. The demo walkthrough assumes you can lose a fight and learn.

Nightmare — F-tier until you know saves, then maybe A. Skip Nightmare until you understand where the game writes progress, how bathing strips curses, and how AP is spent. Nightmare is not a prestige skin. It is a request that you already have a mall kit. If you are still swinging the starter stick at the first rat, you are not ready.

Early investment ranks

Food — S. Cooked leftovers beat a stick upgrade on day one through day four. A stew is HP, a status buffer, and a reason not to flee every Shopper. Do not enter the mall hungry. That line is also in the first-week planner because people ignore it.

Stick upgrades — A, but later. Molly’s copper loop exists so you can leave the stick behind. Do the workshop task. Buy the mall pickaxe when the food-court mine matters. Do not spend your last radish gold on a cosmetic handle while your inventory is empty of meals.

Rituals — B until weapons exist. Rituals are strong and tempting because they look like Old God content. They are not your first mall ticket. Weapons and food first, Old Gods second. A ritual on an empty stomach is still an empty stomach.

Bathing — S as a habit, not an item. Bathe before delves. Bathing heals and strips curses. It also shuffles some world state. Going into the mall filthy is how you discover that a curse you could have washed off is now an AP tax.

Boss order

Hall Monitor — first real mall wall. Rank: the correct first boss. Learn AP, guarding, and when walking around a fight tile is the adult choice. Bring food. If you cannot beat Hall Monitor, you are not ready for anyone with a longer title.

Administrator — second. Rank: the correct second boss. Do not skip ahead because a wiki spoiler named them. Upgrade after Hall Monitor, cook again, bathe again, then go.

Anything deeper in the mall, mines, or later dungeons is unranked here on purpose. The demo is a vertical slice; the full game dated September 10, 2026 adds more dungeon space. We will not invent a complete boss ladder.

Weaknesses worth ranking

Shoppers — Insanity / Curse. If a fight against mall Shoppers is dragging, you are probably hitting the wrong damage type. Pack the tools that apply Insanity or Curse rather than grinding physical chips forever.

Rats — Curse / Light. The joke enemy is still a kit check. Light and Curse cut them down. Physical flailing is how a first rat becomes a reload.

These two charts cover most early wipes. The in-game bestiary, once you find it, outranks this paragraph. Use this until you have the book.

AP management — the hidden S-tier skill

Every attack, ritual, guard, and item costs AP. Spending everything on a big hit and then eating a combo is a self-inflicted Nightmare. Guard when you cannot finish. You cannot flee once the fight starts, so the real S-tier choice is walking around an encounter until you have food. Leaving a Shopper unfought so you can eat at home is how you still have a farm tomorrow.

Sleep luck can dump a curse onto this math. If you stayed up for gifts and woke cursed, do not “push the mall anyway.” Bathe, cook, then go. The sleep guide is part of combat whether the combat UI admits it or not.

Loadout that actually ranks well

  1. Difficulty: Cozy for townsfolk hours, Normal for dungeon hours. Nightmare off.
  2. Inventory: two cooked meals minimum, cleansing if you have it, not your only Harvest Stew meant for Tanner.
  3. Body: bathed.
  4. Weapon: whatever Molly and the Mall Rat have made possible, not a plan for a ritual you have not crafted.
  5. Target: Hall Monitor, then Administrator.
  6. Brain: Shopper versus Insanity/Curse, Rat versus Curse/Light.

Crops still matter. Wheat and radish on the crop list are how the meals exist. A C-tier cauliflower field will not save you in the food court.

If you came from a search for “Elderfield combat tier list” looking for a ranked roster of party members, there is not one. You are the party. Rank your habits. Then go back to the tier list hub or the mall dungeon page and fight the Monitor like you brought lunch.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Should I play Welcome to Elderfield on Cozy or Normal?

Cozy if you came for story, farming, and townsfolk. Normal if you want the turn-based RPG. Details are on this page; mechanics are in the combat guide.

When is Nightmare a good idea?

After you understand saves, bathing, food, and AP — not on a fresh file. Skip it until Hall Monitor is comfortable on Normal.

What should I upgrade first, food or weapons?

Food. Early meals outrank stick upgrades. Cook leftovers, then visit Molly. The first-week planner puts this in day order.

Which mall boss do I fight first?

Hall Monitor, then Administrator. Bring food and bathe first. Route notes: mall dungeon.

What are Shoppers and Rats weak to?

Shoppers: Insanity and Curse. Rats: Curse and Light. If a fight stalls, you are probably swinging the wrong type.

Where are crop ranks?

On the crop tier list. Wheat and radish are how you afford the meals this page keeps demanding.
