Welcome to Elderfield Sleep, Luck Rolls, and Curses
Optional nights, stay-awake stacks, moon events, and the bath that strips them.
Sleep in Welcome to Elderfield is a tool, not a bedtime. You may sleep after 6pm. You never have to. The calendar still advances at midnight — about 20 minutes of real time — whether you are in bed, in the mall, or staring at wheat. Sleeping burns a large chunk of that clock, which is why farmers sleep: four nights of wheat vanish faster if you roll the die. The die is the horror. A luck roll can gift gold, skip the next normal encounter, push crop growth, or permanently nudge a stat. It can also put rats in the bed, raid 5% of your gold, or cut a stat. This page is how to choose the roll instead of inheriting it. Pair it with farming for why nights matter and combat for why the stay-awake stack shows up in AP fights.
The bed also manual-saves. Saving and sleeping are neighbors on the same piece of furniture; after 6pm the sleep prompt is the one that warns you strange things may happen in the dark. Before 6pm you are only saving. Nightmare difficulty already keys off that manual save, so a cursed nap is also a checkpoint. Cozy and Normal keep you in the current day after death; they do not make the luck die polite.
Stay awake on purpose
Each extra day without sleep layers a named state. They stack; bathing does not wipe the sleep-debt sequence the way it wipes a mystery curse, so plan the streak.
| Day awake | Name | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Heavy Eyelids | −15% EXP |
| 3 | Slow Reflexes | −15% Agility |
| 4 | Deeper Insight + Sleep Deprivation | −30% MP cost, −15% food healing |
| 5 | Awakened Senses + Mind Rot | +15% damage, −15% hit |
| 6 | Fully Awake + Sleep Finds You | +10% crit, and sleep will come looking |
Day 4 is the scholar’s bargain: rituals get cheap, sandwiches get thin. Day 5 is a boss gamble if you can live with misses. Day 6 is a dare. Sleep Finds You is the game reminding you that optional sleep was always a story beat. If you want the MP discount for a mall ritual kit, stay up to day 4, bathe off unrelated curses, cook extra to cover the food penalty, then either sleep before Hall Monitor or accept Mind Rot on day 5.
EXP and Agility penalties make overnight grinding in the mall inefficient. If you are only watering and cooking, Heavy Eyelids is flavor. If you are hunting the Mall Administrator’s 250 HP and Skull of the Mall, sleep the night before. The mall dungeon does not care that you wanted one more floor.
What the luck die can do
Positive sleep events include a gold gift, an encounter skip (the next normal tile will not grab you), extra crop growth, and rare permanent stat ups. Negative events include rats in the bed, a 5% gold raid, injuries, and permanent stat downs. Neutral or story dreams happen too. You do not pick the table; luck and moon modifiers do. A Pale Moon day that already cut luck 20% is a bad night to fish for gold. A quiet night after a bath, with Tax Man paid and wheat watered, is a better roll if you need crop skips.
Moon events fire at midnight whether you sleep or not. Pale Moon and Tax Fog still usher the Tax Man to the farm on his two-week cycle. Staying up does not dodge him. Sleeping does not dodge him. Pay the crops. Other moons can hush enemies or sour luck; watch the news television at home and treat the alert as a clock, not flavor text. Mysteries and Old Gods also love midnight. If a news story names a tile, decide before 12:00 whether you want to be in bed or on that tile.
Baths strip what sleep will not
The bathtub is the clean reset. Full HP, full MP, most blessings and curses gone, monsters and mysteries respawned. A weekly bath regenerates forage nodes and mine layouts — relevant to fishing and mining and Molly’s Elder Gem. Blessings you wanted to keep for a fight will vanish too, so sequence it: fight, then bathe, not the other way around, unless the curse is Mind Rot’s cousin from a mystery tile.
Sleep does not replace a bath. A lucky nap might lift something; a bath will. If you woke with weakness, rats, or a stat you did not agree to, walk to the tub before you walk west. House upgrades from Klaus can make the home nicer; they do not change the die. Cooking still matters because Sleep Deprivation hits food healing — cooking and crafting is how you stock the worse sandwiches.
Practical rules
- Water first, then sleep, so the night you bought is a growth night.
- Do not sleep at 6:01pm on Tax Fog until the bill is paid at the farm.
- Manual-save, then sleep, so Nightmare has a sane rollback.
- Stay up through a mall scouting run on cheap food; sleep before a named boss.
- If Sleep Finds You is on the bar, stop being clever and use the bed.
- Dave’s door (code 43681 from Sam’s 43_81 note) and Abby’s Shopper-Bopper do not require insomnia. Do them on a rested day.
- PrintScreen the curse description if the UI is busy; the controls page covers screenshots and bind fixes.
The demo has been playable since October 2024 with this sleep system in place, which is why so many clips are people yelling at a d6. 1.0 is dated September 10, 2026; the die will still be there. For a first-week schedule that bakes in one planned all-nighter at most, use the first-week planner. For the west road that makes the nights worth selling, stay on Getting Started and the demo walkthrough. For townsfolk who comment on the bags under your eyes, players and townsfolk keep the roster.
Optional sleep is the thesis of Elderfield’s cozy horror: rest is a wager. Stay awake for insight, or lie down and let the town roll. Either way, midnight comes, the Tax Man eventually comes, and the tub is still the kindest altar in the house. When the stack is uglier than the mall, sleep. When the mall is uglier than the stack, cook, save, and go. The guides hub will still be there in the morning — assuming you get one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
When can I sleep?
After 6pm. Sleep is optional. Midnight still changes the day in about 20 minutes of real time if you stay up.
What does staying awake do?
Day 2 Heavy Eyelids −15% EXP, day 3 Slow Reflexes −15% Agility, day 4 cheaper MP and weaker food, day 5 more damage and worse hit, day 6 crits plus Sleep Finds You.
Does a bath clear sleep curses?
A bath restores HP and MP and strips most blessings and curses, including many overnight afflictions. It does not replace sleeping if Sleep Finds You is already ticking.
Do moon events wait until I go to bed?
No. Pale Moon, Tax Fog, and other midnight events happen whether you sleep or not. The Tax Man still arrives on his roughly two-week cycle.
Can sleep steal my gold?
Yes. A bad luck roll can raid 5% of your gold, spawn rats in the bed, or cut a stat. Good rolls can gift gold, skip an encounter, or grow crops.
