Welcome to Elderfield Fishing and Mining Routes
Rod and maggots for sewer fish; pickaxe and keys for copper, gems, and shuffled mine floors.
Fishing and mining are how Welcome to Elderfield feeds the kitchen and the forge when the farm is still a rectangle of tentacles. A rod plus bait puts Ghost Flounder in the pan. A pickaxe puts copper in Molly’s hands. Neither system is optional if you want the demo’s full task list. The Steam demo, playable since October 2024, includes the lakefront, the sewers, the Beginner Mines, and Mall Mines F1–F3. Old Woods Mines belong to the 1.0 map dated September 10, 2026. The game is single-player; the fish do not wait for a second lure.
Cook what you catch the same day. Raw fish sell for pocket change and heal like a rumor. The cooking and crafting page lists Tempura, soups, and Fog Broth. Smelt what you mine before you gift an ore to someone who wanted a bar. Then bathe, because both the sewers and the mines stack curses. Sleep and curses is the companion page for that part.
Fishing: rod, maggots, two waters
Fisherman Herb lives at the lakefront, reached through the sewer entrance in the park. He hands you the Old Fishing Rod and worms when his Casting Your Line task starts. Show him a Ghost Flounder, then a Fog Eel, and he teaches the fish recipes. Fog Eels want leeches, which drop from bait packs at the general store, not from the starter worm tin. Keep buying packs.
Maggots (and worms, bugs, leeches) are the real resource. Sewer fish in particular want maggots on the hook. Stock them before you commit to a Rot Puffer afternoon. The Garbage Man restocks odd bait on Monday and Thursday if the store packs run dry.
Two water bodies matter in the demo:
- Lakefront. Open water after the sewer walk. Ghost Flounder, Fog Eel, Mud Perch. Herb stands here. This is the tutorial hole and the Fog Broth hole for Dave.
- Sewers. Dark water under town. Rot Puffer, Slimefish, Ghost Flounder, Fog Eel, Mud Perch depending on the pool. Slimeweed grows on the walls while you fish, which is free food if you remember to pick it. The Gatekeeper, pizza errands, and a flickering altar mystery share the same tunnels.
The mall adds a third, meaner pool in the back hallways. An office worker wants a rare catch (Stalktopus, with bugs as bait) before they will call the Mall Administrator. That is a fishing check gating a mall dungeon boss, not a side hobby. Bring extra bugs. If you run out, the worker will not restock you.
Cast, wait, hook. Quality food and luck gear help, including Gatis or Delvek weeks from the old gods page. Do not fish starving. A Rot Puffer in the pack does not save you from a Pipe Cleaner in the corridor on the walk home.
Mining: three shafts, one shuffle
Mines in Elderfield shuffle. Rooms, ore nodes, and enemies rearrange between trips, so a drawn map goes stale. Bring food, a better pickaxe than you think you need, and a way home.
Beginner Mines sit near Molly’s workshop, south of the farm path. One floor. Copper, stone, coal. Enemies are weak: Cavemen, Living Rocks, the odd Bag Boy. This is the copper for Molly’s Helping Molly task, which rewards the rusty pickaxe and workshop access. Do not skip it. Mall gem veins will not pay that early bill.
Mall Mines open in the food court. F1, F2, F3. Talk to the Mall Rat immediately. He sells the Basic Pickaxe and opens the Sealed Passage. The rusty tool is not enough here. Skull Chalice ores for Hans live on these floors, which is why that task grants a Furnace. The Elder Gem chain is also here: lost miner, Peculiar Offering, altar, Gem Golem, gem for Molly. Floor three hides a big tree you cut later with a real axe. Small mine keys open extra doors. Full boss notes sit on the mall page.
Old Woods Mines are a 1.0 shaft. Plan for them after September 10, 2026, when the town expansion and extra dungeon layers are scheduled. Until then, do not wander looking for a woods elevator that the demo does not contain. Forage the woods edge if the build you have allows it; do not assume a third mine ladder.
Layouts shuffle in all of these. Treat each descent like a new floor even if the entrance is familiar. If a node you wanted is gone, leave, bathe, and come back rather than circling until the curses kill you. Valtris weeks can mint Mine Keys at the God Forge; Kaal or Nezroth weeks make the HP bar more polite. Hagroth weeks are for planting, not for Gem Golem.
How the two skills feed everything else
Copper bars become weapons at Molly’s forge and house parts via Klaus. Mystery Meat and fish become exploration meals. Fog Broth pays Dave. Slimefish and Rot Puffer look ugly and still cook. Ghost Flounder is a Herb checkbox and a Sam hated gift — cook it for yourself, do not wrap it for romance. Shadewing moths and void crops are not mining drops; do not live in the shaft so long that you forget the farm.
A clean split day: morning mine copper in the beginner shaft, afternoon fish Herb’s lake, evening smelt and cook, night saloon. A mall day: food court mines until the pickaxe rings empty, then one sewer cast on the way home for Slimeweed. The first-week planner keeps wheat in that mix so Hans is not ignored. Getting Started and the demo walkthrough still own the opening hours. Farming owns the plots you should be watering between shafts. Controls if the rod bind fights the pickaxe bind.
Fishing is a queue of bait. Mining is a queue of food and keys. Run both queues and the rest of Elderfield — kitchen, forge, mysteries, marriage fridge — has something to put on the table. Run neither and you will arrive at Burgers Burgers with a rusty tool and a polite hunger.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
What bait do sewer fish want?
A fishing rod plus maggots. Rot Puffer and Slimefish live in the sewers. Buy bait packs at the general store, and check the Garbage Man on Monday and Thursday.
Where is the lakefront?
Through the sewer entrance in the park. Herb teaches fishing there and wants a Ghost Flounder, then a Fog Eel. Fog Eels prefer leeches from bait packs.
Where do I mine copper for Molly?
Beginner Mines near her workshop, south of the farm path. One floor, copper, stone, and coal. Mall Mines are for chalice ores and the Elder Gem, not that first copper bill.
Do mine layouts stay the same?
No. Rooms shuffle between trips. Bring food and keys, and do not trust yesterday's path. Mall Mines F1–F3 and the beginner shaft both rearrange.
When do Old Woods Mines open?
They are part of the 1.0 town expansion dated September 10, 2026. The demo contains Beginner Mines and Mall Mines only.
Can a friend mine with me?
No. Welcome to Elderfield is single-player. Your ore, bait, and floor shuffles belong to that save.
