Welcome to Elderfield Romance, Gifts, and Marriage
Friendship now, marriage in the 1.0 build: loved gifts, hated junk, and who hangs out where.
Welcome to Elderfield treats townsfolk as schedules, not collectible cards. You talk, you gift, you show up at the saloon after dark, and hearts move. Romance and marriage are part of the 1.0 plan dated September 10, 2026. The Steam demo, playable since October 2024, already lets you raise friendship, complete tasks, and learn who loves Aged Rum versus who will never forgive a pumpkin. Do not expect a wedding cutscene in the vertical slice. Do expect the gift tables to matter the moment 1.0 unlocks a ring.
Gifts raise friendship. Loved items move the bar; hated items slam it. One gift per character per day is the safe habit. Talk first, gift second, then leave them to their route. A full roster with likes and hated lists lives on the gifts page; this guide is the romance loop around those tables. The townsfolk page covers schedules. The game is single-player — you are not competing with a second farmer for the same heart.
Tanner
Tanner is the first face outside your house and the path toward the Old Woods. Rain and snow keep him indoors. If the Lost Gameboy task is active, he waits at the town outskirts until you finish it.
He loves Aged Rum, Beating Heart, Harvest Stew, and Shadewing Moth. He hates Bloodwing Moth, Eyeball, Ice Cream, Stealth Musk, Snow Pearl, and Tooth. That split is a crafting test. Aged Rum wants casks. Harvest Stew wants a farm that actually cooks. Shadewing Moth is forage, not a shop snack. Do not hand him the Bloodwing cousin, an eyeball from a head crop, or a tooth you thought was quirky. Ice cream looks friendly and is not.
Tanner is a strong 1.0 marriage candidate if you already live on stew and moths. He is a poor target if your inventory is all mall viscera.
Sam
Sam drifts between the general store, the playground, bus stops, and the lakefront, then often lands in the Eldersfield Saloon at night. She lives in Greystone Estates, Apt 1 on F1. Childhood Fear parks her in estate hallways until that task ends. If she visits the farm, she can stay until midnight.
She loves Beating Heart, Expert Garden Salad, Pale Empress Moth, Soul Fruit, Voidbloom, Void Crystal Bar, and Void Dinner. She hates cooked meat, pumpkins, Harvest Stew, and Ghost Flounder. This is the opposite of a harvest-festival palate. The stew Tanner loves will offend her. Pumpkin Pie from Elroy is a trap. Ghost Flounder you just caught for Herb is a trap. Void dinner from the Witching Mortar loop is the long game.
Sam also writes the Cryptic Note that solves Dave’s door on the mysteries page. Friendship with her is puzzle access, not only a heart color.
Everyone else you should still gift
Marriage in 1.0 is planned as one spouse. Friendship is not. The demo town is already crowded:
- Ellie. Town regular; keep a liked gift in the pack when you pass the square.
- Farmer Hans. Wheat, pumpkins, Skull Chalice, Fast Food Fiend. Your farming loop is his love language more than a moth.
- Molly. Copper, workshop, Elder Gem. Mine for her before you try to charm her with jewelry you have not smelted.
- Abby. The Shopper-Bopper kid in the south park. Fight a Shopper; then gift something that is not a mall organ.
- Pumpkid / Billy. Pranks, slime, wine. A child-shaped problem, not a spouse.
- Amelia and Martin. Household pair; treat them as two schedules, not one gift dump.
- Adrian and Jeannie. Tentacles, mall back hallways, calendar notes about Dave’s passcode. Adrian’s cleanup axe is a friendship byproduct.
- Akira. Catch them on a town route; do not assume they share Tanner’s stew taste.
- Dave. Neighbor, locked door, Fog Broth errand. Useful, unsettling, giftable.
- Old Man Jackson. House northeast of town; a steady talk node when you are already walking to the bus.
- Klaus. House upgrades, extra kitchen space, Juicer. Paying him is a relationship.
- Chef Elroy. Recipes and saloon evenings. Gift cooked food he did not just sell you.
The Players Hub is the index if this list is still growing after a patch.
Saloon evenings and how hearts actually move
Evenings at the Eldersfield Saloon compress the roster. Sam is often there. Edwin and other wanderers rotate in. If you only play mornings, you will miss half the dialogue. Sleep after 6pm still rolls luck, but a saloon stop before bed is the romance tax. Bring two gifts: one loved item and one backup like because the person you wanted may already have received today’s present from you.
Tasks still beat random trinkets. Hans’s wheat, Molly’s copper, Abby’s Shopper, Herb’s fish, Pete’s shrines, and Dave’s broth all print friendship while unlocking systems. A loved gift on top of a finished task is how you hit the high heart counts 1.0 marriage will demand. The planned proposal flow uses a crafted ring (Ring of Binding at a Jeweler’s Desk once you sit at 10 hearts, with Father Desmond as the reminder). Until September 10, 2026, treat 10 hearts as a target, not a button.
What not to do
Do not gift Bloodwing Moth to Tanner and Pale Empress to nobody. Moths are not interchangeable. Do not cook Harvest Stew as a universal loved meal — Sam hates it. Do not hand cooked meat to a void palate. Do not skip baths and show up to the saloon trailing mall curses; sleep and curses will explain the face they make. Do not wait to learn cooking until 1.0; the gift kitchen is already in the demo.
If you need a first-week social route, talk to Tanner, Hans, Molly, and Abby in that order, then saloon. Use the first-week planner so gifts do not crowd out wheat. Getting Started and the demo walkthrough cover the same opening without the dating overlay. Old gods weeks can feed the loop: Hagroth for stew crops, Nezroth for Blood of the Gods, Valtris if you need keys more than kisses.
Romance in Elderfield is a calendar, a fridge, and a note in Sam’s handwriting. Fill those three and the 1.0 wedding will have somewhere to stand.
