Bestiary Guide

The bestiary is your reference for every hostile creature in Welcome to Elderfield. Encounters are placed on the map — you walk into them, not over them — and the game forces a fight you cannot flee. Knowing what spawns where, what hits hard, and what drops useful loot is the difference between a planned mall run and a five-percent-gold death on Normal difficulty. This page covers demo content: Town, Mall, Sewers, and Mines. Old Woods and Catacombs monsters are part of the 1.0 map dated September 10, 2026.

Every enemy in Elderfield fits a type and a difficulty bracket. Some are fodder. Some are gear checks. Some are gated behind task chains that require you to kill a specific monster before a shop opens or a boss becomes available. Read the mall dungeon page for the dungeon-specific encounters and the demo walkthrough for the order to tackle them.

How combat encounters work

Welcome to Elderfield uses placed encounters, not random battles. You see the enemy on the map, walk adjacent to it, and the turn-based fight begins automatically. There is no flee option. You fight to the death or you die and reload. On Normal difficulty, death means losing five percent of your gold and returning home; enemies and mysteries reset when you return. Cozy mode trivializes these fights so the horror stays in the writing. Nightmare mode reloads your last manual save.

Enemies scale within zones but not dynamically — the Mall has harder enemies than the Beginner Mines, and certain floors within the Mall are harder than others. The game tells you when you are approaching a harder zone. Pay attention to the music and the enemy count.

Mall enemies — the dead mall floor plan

The mall is the demo’s primary dungeon and the zone with the highest enemy density. Most mall encounters are avoidable if you know the layout, but the boss fights are mandatory.

The Hall Monitor at 150 HP is the opening gear check. If your food stack and weapon are insufficient, you will die here before reaching the deeper mall floors. The Denizen of the Deep-Fryer is a task-gated boss: you must complete the Fast Food Fiend errand for Hans before the fight triggers. The Mall Administrator at 250 HP is the demo’s final mall boss and the source of the Skull of the Mall key item.

Sewer enemies

The sewers sit under the park and the general store, accessible through sewer entrances. They are the path to the lakefront and a zone with its own enemy roster.

Rot PufferSewer dark waterSewer fish; wants maggots on hook

The sewer enemies are notable because the Sewers are also a fishing zone. Some sewer creatures appear both as combat enemies and as fish you can catch with a rod and bait. The Sewers also connect to the Gatekeeper NPC, the flickering altar mystery, and the lakefront exit.

Mine enemies

Mines appear in two demo locations: Beginner Mines near Molly’s workshop and Mall Mines in the food court. Both have shuffled layouts, and enemies respawn on a bath cycle.

Mall RatMall Mines F1Sells Basic Pickaxe; opens Sealed Passage
Gem GolemMall MinesElder Gem chain enemy; drops gems for Molly

The Gem Golem is part of the Elder Gem task chain: lost miner, Peculiar Offering, altar, Gem Golem, gem for Molly. This is a multi-step fetch chain, not a random encounter. The Mall Rat is an NPC who also appears as an enemy on Mall Mines F1 — talk to him first to get the pickaxe before fighting through the floors.

The Hall Monitor at 150 HP teaches Action Point economics. If you cannot sustain HP above the next hit with your food stack, you are not ready for 250. The Mall Administrator drops the Skull of the Mall, which is the demo’s key completionist item for the dungeon.

Enemy types and weaknesses

Elderfield enemies fall into broad visual categories that loosely map to difficulty:

  • Fodder: Bag Boy, Shopper — low HP, basic attacks, the tutorial bracket.
  • Common: Caveman, Living Rocks, Globule — mid HP, appears in groups.
  • Special: Gem Golem, Hall Monitor — task-gated or gear-check bosses.
  • Boss: Denizen of the Deep-Fryer, Mall Administrator — story-gated, high HP, unique drops.

Rituals from the Old Gods system interact with enemy types. Delvek-aligned rituals may boost luck rolls in combat. Kaal and Nezroth weeks affect HP recovery and enemy aggression respectively. Hagroth weeks are planting season — do not expect combat bonuses.

Enemy drops and loot

GlobuleSlimeCrafting ingredient
Living RocksStone, oreMine progression resource
CavemanRaw meatCooking ingredient
Gem GolemElder GemMolly’s Elder Gem task chain
Mall AdministratorSkull of the MallDemo completionist item

Mystery Meat from Shoppers is one of the more useful drops — it cooks into meals and sells for 7g raw. Slime from Globules is primarily a crafting ingredient. Stone and ore from Living Rocks and Cavemen feed the smelting loop.

Preparing for encounters

A practical combat prep loop before any dangerous tile:

  1. Cook a full meal stack, not a snack.
  2. Equip a weapon better than the tutorial stick.
  3. Bathe to reset monsters and wipe curses.
  4. Check that you have Cleansing Balm for curse removal mid-fight.
  5. Manual save on the bed.
  6. Enter the zone with full HP and a food inventory.

The combat page has the full AP system breakdown and boss HP values. The first-week planner orders encounters into a manageable schedule. The demo walkthrough sequences the mandatory fights before optional exploration.

Enemies are the price of progress in Elderfield. Know what you are walking into, bring enough food to survive a wrong guess, and save before the boss door.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Can I run from enemy encounters?

No. Encounters are placed on the map and unavoidable. You fight to the death or die and reload. Cozy mode trivializes fights; Nightmare reloads your last manual save.

What is the first mall boss?

The Hall Monitor at 150 HP, encountered early in the mall corridor. It is a gear check — if your weapon and food stack are insufficient, you will die before reaching deeper floors.

Where is the Gem Golem?

Mall Mines F3, as part of the Elder Gem task chain: lost miner, Peculiar Offering, altar, Gem Golem, gem for Molly. It is not a random encounter — it is a quest trigger.

What does the Mall Administrator drop?

The Skull of the Mall, the demo's key completionist item. The Administrator has 250 HP and is the final boss of the demo's dungeon.

Do sewer enemies also appear as fish?

Yes. Fog Eels, Rot Puffers, and Slimefish appear both as sewer combat encounters and as fishable species. Sewers are a hybrid combat-fishing zone.

Do enemy layouts reset?

Yes. Like mysteries and foraging nodes, enemies reset when you take a bath. A bath mid-expedition respawns the entire zone.
