Welcome to Elderfield Daily TV News and Event Triggers
Watch the news, go to the tile, get the loot — the television is your daily quest board.
The television in your house is not decoration. Each day it broadcasts a local news program that points at a specific location or event somewhere in Elderfield. Go there the same day. Repeat broadcasts can replay an event with a different outcome. As you push the story, more news scripts unlock. Treat the TV like a daily quest board that lies in a polite voice — and check it before you leave the house every morning.
The Steam demo, playable since October 2024, already includes the news system. The full PC game is dated September 10, 2026 and adds more broadcast scripts as the story expands into Old Woods and Catacombs zones. The game is single-player; nobody else can watch the news for you.
How the news system works
Wake up. Turn on the TV before you water crops or talk to anyone. The broadcast names a location, an object, or a behavior. That day is your window. If the report mentions digging, bring a shovel from the general store. If it mentions water, bring the fishing rod. If it names a specific tile, walk there before midnight.
News is a strong reason to stay on a tight sleep cycle. Sleep after 6pm to roll night luck, but do not skip the morning broadcast. A missed broadcast is a missed event — not a game-over, but a wait-until-next-week for seasonal triggers and a wait-until-next-month for calendar-locked spawns.
Common news event types
Buried treasure — The news names a district or a specific tile. Bring a shovel. Dig where indicated. The Gemflower is one such event according to wiki records — it spawns via news broadcast, not as a fixed node.
Sewer legends — Points at a sewer entrance or a specific pool. Bring the fishing rod and maggots. Some sewer events unlock fishing tutorials, NPC tasks, or altar interactions.
Lakefront chants — Points at the lakefront via the sewer path. Herb lives there. Fog Eel and Fog Broth tasks can trigger from these broadcasts.
Moon event warnings — Pale Moon, Tax Fog, and other calendar events are announced. These are not optional flavor — they affect midnight and the Tax Man’s path. Watch the news to know when to pay taxes before you sleep.
God shrine hints — Some broadcasts point at shrine rooms in the mall, sewers, or Old Woods. Aligning with a god that week makes the shrine interaction more productive. See the Old Gods page for which Sunday matches your target shrine.
Finger trail — The Nezroth event. A trail of fingers leads to something. This is a god-specific mystery tied to Nezroth, the God of Flesh.
Event examples from the demo
Gemflower spawn — News names a dig spot. Shovel in hand, go that day. The Gemflower is a crafting ingredient and a rare forage that only appears through this broadcast.
Slimeweed surge — Sewer-specific event. The news notes unusual slime growth in the tunnels. Head to the sewers, pick Slimeweed, and the event may trigger a bonus drop or NPC interaction.
Buried cache — Pointed at by the news, dug with a shovel. Rewards vary from gold to curse to blessing depending on the tile’s luck roll. See mysteries for how the luck die behaves.
Moon event — News announces Pale Moon or Tax Fog. Pay the Tax Man at the farm before you sleep. The bill appears whether you watched or not — the news tells you when, not whether.
Coordinating news with the rest of the day
A practical news day:
- Wake, watch TV for location.
- If the broadcast names a distant tile, plan your route — do not detour to Hans mid-event.
- Gather the required item: shovel, rod, bait, or nothing at all.
- Visit the named tile before midnight.
- If the tile is a mystery, roll the luck die. See mysteries.
- Cook and sleep after the event, not before.
The first-week planner leaves a TV slot every morning before the west-road walk to Hans. That habit pays dividends once news events start feeding the Art Gallery and Old God alignment chains.
What the news cannot tell you
The TV does not announce boss spawns, save file corruption, or the exact contents of a buried tile. It does not warn you that Sleep Finds You is stacking on day six. It does not tell you that the mall layout shuffled overnight. Use it as a daily compass, not a full map. The mall dungeon, fishing and mining, and Old Gods pages cover the zones the news eventually points at.
The news is the game’s quietest storyteller. Watch it every morning, and Elderfield slowly reveals its buried shape.
